Biographical Sketch of Herbert Gold

Part of the Ohio Author Sketches series on selected Ohio authors as originally published in the Ohioana Quarterly with material from the Ohioana Library collection..

Herbert Gold was born in Cleveland OH and grew up Lakewood OH. and a member of the sole Jewish family around. At seventeen he ventured to New York and fell in briefly with the New York literary crowd and studied philosophy at Columbia University. He later won a Fulbright scholarship and moved to Paris with his wife, a Detroit school teacher that married in Cleveland. His first novel, Birth of a Hero was written while he was in Paris and was published by Viking Press in 1951. Birth of a Hero is Gold's fictional account of growing up in Lakewood. Gold eventually settled in San Francisco.

He has published more than twenty novels as well as countless short stories, essays, articles, and memoirs. His most successful novel is Fathers: A Novel in Form of a Memoir about a Ukrainian father and son dealing with immigrant life in America.
