Jorma Kaukonen
Pomeroy OH
Musician
Washington D.C. native, Jorma Kaukonen’s career has spanned a half-century. He is a leading practitioner and teacher of fingerstyle guitar,
one of the most highly respected interpreters of American roots music, blues, and Americana, and was at the forefront of popular rock-and-roll.
He was a founding member of two legendary bands, Jefferson Airplane and the still-touring Hot Tuna, a Grammy nominee, a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of
Fame and the most in-demand instructor at the Fur Peace Ranch Guitar Camp that he and his wife operate.
Jorma’s first experience in Ohio was as a student at Antioch College in Yellow Springs. In 1989 he and his wife, Vanessa, looked at a
piece of land in Meigs county and conceived what Jorma calls “a ranch that grows guitar players.” The Kaukonens’ Fur Peace Ranch is located on
125 acres of fields, woods, hills, and streams in the Appalachian foothills of Southeastern Ohio. Since it opened in 1998, thousands of musicians whose
skills range from basic to highly accomplished gather for weekends of master instruction offered by Kaukonen and other instructors who are leaders in their musical fields.
Kaukonen is constantly looking to take his musical horizons further still, always moving forward and he is quick to say that teaching is among the most rewarding aspects of his career.
