Ohioana Citation for Art: 2006

Yasue Sakaoka, Columbus OH

Another citation award for art was presented to Ann Hamilton

Yasue Sakaoka is an extremely talented artist and a tireless advocate of the arts in Ohio. Born in Japan, Sakaoka reveals her Japanese heritage in large-scale three-dimensional paper sculptures that reflect the influence of the ancient folk art of origami.

Her work has been shown at the Galerie International in New York, the Dayton Art Institute, and the Martin Luther King Performing Arts Center in Columbus, among many others, and she has also curated numerous exhibits around the state and written for a number of art publications and catalogues.

A recipient of fellowships from the Ohio Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities, she has most recently served as a visiting artist in sculpture at the Stivers School for the Arts in Dayton.
