Bill Thompson
III took over the editorship of Bird Watcher’s Digest from his parents, Elsa and Bill
Thompson Jr., who launched the magazine from their home in Marietta, Ohio, in 1978.
Since its inception the magazine’s circulation has grown from 5,000 to more than
100,000.
Along with editing the magazine, Thompson has authored
three books, Bird Watching for Dummies, An Identification Guide to
Common Backyard Birds and the Backyard Bird Watcher’s Answer Guide,
along with a series of bird watching guides for the Midwest.
Thompson lives on an 80-acre farm just outside of Whipple, Ohio, with his wife,
author/artist Julie Zickefoose, who often provides artwork for the magazine.
