Second Annual Ohioana Book Festival: Celebrating Ohio’s Authors
Mark your calendars for Saturday, May 10, as we present the second annual Ohioana Book Festival in Columbus.
Our theme will be Celebrating Ohio’s Authors. Frances Strickland, Ohio’s First Lady, will once again serve as the festival’s Honorary Chair.
Ten noted Ohio writers, representing a diversity of literary styles and genres, have been engaged as featured authors.
They are: cartoonist Tom Batiuk, creator of the popular comic strip Funky Winkerbean;
Sharon Draper, prize-winning writer of books for young adults;
Tom Duffy, journalist and associate managing editor of Time magazine; popular mystery and historical novelist Karen Harper;
Zakes Mda, South African-born playwright and novelist; poet and children’s author Marilyn Nelson;
Harvey Pekar, creator of the comic book and graphic novel series American Splendor; novelist Mary Doria Russell;
Connie Schultz, Pulitzer Prize-winning commentator for the Cleveland Plain Dealer; and culinary writer Marilou K. Suszko.
The featured authors will be in Columbus for two days of events and programming. Friday, May 9, will be a day of
outreach, with appearances by the authors at several schools, libraries, and other community centers; plus a live radio panel
discussion with popular WOSU Open Line host Fred Andrle.
Saturday, May 10 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. will be the main event at Ohioana and the State Library. First
Lady Frances Strickland will kick the day off with an opening ceremony and our featured authors will be participating
throughout the day in panel discussions, readings, and book signings.
An additional 30 Ohio authors will join Saturday’s festival, to meet and mingle with readers and sign copies of their latest books.
Saturday’s event is free and open to the public. In addition to the literary programs, the day will include food, entertainment, and an on-site Barnes & Noble book store and café.
